Required technical gear

This is the definitive list of mandatory and recommended minimum material for each distance, based on the Friday October 1st weather forecast.

Even so, it may be insufficient if forecast fails, or weather becomes unstable. Therefore, it is up to each participant to asses this mountain risk, and decide whether to bring more additional material for the benefit of their own safety.

Mobile phone with full battery and roaming activated.

Mandatory at all the races.

More info

The phone has to be turned on from the race start, with active roaming, sound at maximal volume, fully charged battery and perfect working condition to withstand the entire race.

Why is it required / recommended?

The mobile phone allows the participant to receive and make emergency calls to the Organization (the telephone number will be noted on the back of the race bib). In addition, it may be useful to send geo-localization information via Liverun App.
Therefore, the phone must be active during the entire race. It is essential to keep the battery as charged as possible, and to avoid making calls or sending data unless it is needed. Functions requesting high battery consumption such as bluetooth or wifi should be inactive.
The reason why the roaming services must be active is that, given the proximity with France, some points of the course may be better served by French telephone network than by Spanish network.

Mandatory Mandatory Mandatory Mandatory
External mobile phone battery

Mandatory in the 100k and highly recommended in the 42k

More info

It must have at least capacity for 2 extra charges.

Why is it required / recommended?

The cold on the high zones, or overnight, reduces a lot the normal duration of all the mobile phones batteries, so is probable that (even starting with the battery charged), the phone will turn off when the runner really need it in a critical moment.

For example, if the fog, or a storm causes a runner to be lost, the fact of having an extra battery is the guarantee for having permanent contact with the organization during the necessary time/hours to locate him, and also to not feel alone all this time.

Thermal blanket

Mandatory at all the races.

More info

Thermal blankets (also known as space blanket or first aid blanket) are made of heat-reflective thin plastic, silver colored on one side and golden on the other. Their design reduces heat loss or increases it depending on how it is placed to cover the person in need.
The minimal surface must be 1.4 m x 2.0 m.

Why is it required / recommended?

Thermal blankets are mainly used to cover an injured person while waiting for help, but it can also be used to signal the position to the aerial rescue team or simply as a protection against wind and rain.
The way it should be used to cover the injured person depends on the situation:
To retain heat: place the silver side in contact with the body and the golden side facing outwards. It is useful in case of hypothermia, injury, having to wait in the cold...
To reduce the temperature: place the golden side in contact with the body and the silver side facing outwards. It is useful in case of fever, heat stroke, having to wait in the heat...

Trail running shoes, and socks

Mandatory at all the races.

More info

They must cover THE WHOLE foot. Sandals are not allowed.

Why is it required / recommended?

It is necessary to consider that in many sections of the route the ground is technical and stony, fact that makes essential to use a shoe that protects THE WHOLE foot of blows and wounds, besides having a good grip.

It is also important to note that many tracks are in high mountain, where it can be very cold (especially at night), so it is imperative to have the foot well insulated using good shoes and socks, because it is one of the areas of our body where we lose more temperature.

There are many different models and brands of trail running shoes in the market. We show a brief selection from our sponsor SALOMON as an example.

Impermeable breathable jacket with hood

Mandatory at all the races, except Nit Pirineu VK

More info

With breathable insulating membrane such as Gore-Tex, Clima Pro, Water Proff, MemBrain, H2O, Hyvent or similar and sealed seams to sustain bad weather conditions in mountain. The jacket must not have sections composed of fabric which is not waterproof, but the air vents (under the arm, across the back), which do not appear to affect the waterproof-ness of the garment are accepted.
IMPERMEABILITY: At least 10,000 mm Schmerber water column (*)
BREATHABILITY: RET score equal or below 13; or MTVR score equal or over 5.000 (*)
(*) Consult the values of your jacket with your retailer/brand.
In case to carry the impermeable jacket, it will not be necessary to take the windstopper jacket.

Why is it required / recommended?

The impermeable breathable jacket with hood may be mandatory during the entire race or from a certain hour, depending on the weather forecast.
Why a hood? The head is one of the parts of the body with greater heat loss. This is why it must be protected from the rain, wind or cold when needed.
Why impermeable? Storms and unexpected rain episodes are very frequent in mountains. Having the body wet for a long time may cause serious problems.

Examples

There are many different models and brands of impermeable breathable jackets with hood in the market. We show a brief selection from our sponsor SALOMON as an example.
Any equivalent from another brand will be equally accepted.

Windstopper jacket

Mandatory only at Nit Pirineu VK

More info

A windstopper jacket should cover the whole trunk (including the arms), and its function is to protect from the wind.
The hood is not mandatory, but it is highly recommended.

Why is it required / recommended?

This clothing gear is the minimum needed to protect a runner from the temperature drop caused by the wind, typical at the highest points of the course even in days of good weather conditions.
The windstopper jacket does NOT offer enough protection from cold or rain. Depending on the weather conditions, or after a certain hour, it may be mandatory to carry gear offering superior protection, such as a polar fleece or an impermeable breathable jacket with hood.
In that case, if a runner carries an impermeable breathable jacket with hood, he/she will be exempt of carrying a windstopper jacket.

Examples

There are many different models and brands of windstopper jackets in the market. We show a brief selection from our sponsor SALOMON as an example.
Any equivalent from another brand will be equally accepted.

Thermal insulation clothing

Mandatory in the 100k and recommended in the rest of races

More info

The thermal insulation clothing must cover the whole trunk, with long sleeves until the wrist. It's function is to help keep the body warm and sustain low temperatures.
It can be a thick thermal shirt of between 150 and 300 g (depending the runner's size), or a polar fleece jacket.
Cotton is not permitted.

Why is it required / recommended?

The thermal clothing may be mandatory during the entire race or from a certain hour, depending on the weather forecast.
Keep in mind that extreme temperature oscillations are common in mountains, and they can happen suddenly.
Also, there are many situations that may force a runner to slow his/her pace, or even to stop during the race. These situations, such as suffering an injury, overexertion, helping a runner in need, etc...may cause the body temperature to drop quickly before arriving to the closest aid station or while waiting for help.

Examples

There are many different models and brands of thermal shirts and polar fleece jackets in the market. We show a brief selection from our sponsor SALOMON as an example.
Any equivalent from another brand will be equally accepted.

GPS (handheld or watch) with the latest version of the official race tracks

Highly recommended in all races.

More info

The organization will mark the route during the 5 days prior to the race, and will make a final review a few hours before starting the race.

Why is it required / recommended?

However, it does NOT guarantee that all the route is correctly marked during the entire race since there are circumstances (out of the organization control) that may unmark some parts of the route for a time, until the organization arrives to solve the problem.

Also, It must be taken into account that even with a correct marking, a poor visibility easily can get us lost. So, it is highly recommended to carry a GPS watch with us.

Given that there are countless brands and models of GPS on the market, here we only show an example of a GPS watch from our sponsor SUUNTO.
